A big congratulations to Kristen Fowler, winner of our 2017 Design Contest! Nestled in the foothills of the mountains, this custom home is designed for an established family. It captures the views of the mountains through massive curtain wall windows and expansive wrapping decks. While contemporary, the outer form of the home emulates the peaks of the mountains while bringing in extra light from the north and east for ambient and morning light. The expansive curtain wall facing the west gives all day views of the mountains and evening views of beautiful Colorado sunsets.
The main level creates a large flowing space for casual entertainment, but still has the intimacy of a family space. There is a guest suite on the main level that allows privacy for guests with an attached bathroom and separation from the home’s private spaces upstairs. At the north end of the house is a study with a two story library. It is nestled to the north in order to gain great northern ambient light for optimum reading and studying. Its private deck allows for the ultimate escape.
Across a catwalk that looks down upon the vaulted great room and foyer, you will find a master suite and two secondary bedroom suites. These spaces give each family member an escape to privacy. With access to the wrap around deck from each room, one can continue to enjoy the views and outdoors from the private zones.
The lower level of the home can be considered a bonus flex space. While it is currently shown as recreation and workout, it could easily function as a small apartment for an in-law or recent graduate who has moved back home. Due to the hills of the site, the lower level is sunken but has a walkout to a patio space that interacts with the hills.
In case you missed it, you can check out the details of the design contest here. And if you haven’t seen them yet, be sure to check out the other design contest entries! The first was a mountain modern home and the second was an internationally inspired infill home.
